Q. Someone posted a video on YouTube that I’m in. I don’t want to be on YouTube, so how do I go about getting the video removed from the site?
A. YouTube has several pages of its site devoted to Content Reporting and Removals that explain how it handles user behavior and what types of material the site does not allows to be posted. The site also has a general guide for protecting the privacy of both people who post videos and people who may be in the clips.
YouTube suggests contacting the person who posted the video in the first place and asking to have it removed from the site. If you do not feel comfortable asking the person who posted it to take down the clip, you can go through YouTube’s Privacy Complaint Process to file your report. (YouTube states that you should contact the local police if you feel that you are in physical danger from a posted clip.)
YouTube has several other notable pages for those new to video-sharing, including its Community Guidelines page and its Safety Center for users. The site separates its content rules regarding user safety, privacy and other personal issues from information on more straightforward legal situations. It has a separate Copyright Center section of its site devoted to educating users on the topic.
