Logitech said Wednesday that its Google TV device, the Logitech Revue, will be upgraded to Honeycomb this week, providing access to the Android Market.
Android 3.1 will be delivered via a software update, Ashish Arora, vice president and general manager of Logitech’s digital home group, said in a blog post.
“If you’re already a Revue user, simply ensure your unit is turned on and connected to the Web, and accept the update that pops up onto your TV screen,” Arora wrote. “New customers are expected to receive this version automatically upon activation.”
What’s included with Honeycomb? Arora said the update includes “more entertainment choices such as access to Android Market; faster and more comprehensive search and browse capabilities; a simplified user interface, and improvements to the Logitech Media Player.”
The upgraded version will also include access to the new Google Music app. The Android Market will also have about 50 apps optimized for HDTV, “and we expect the number of apps to increase over time,” Arora wrote.
But will the update help the beleaguered Logitech Revue? In July, Logitech dropped the price of the Revue to $99, down from $249 (and $299 at launch). The company also said during an earnings call that people were returning more devices than buying them, but later issued a statement to say that was not the case.
“Customer feedback is very important to us, and we worked closely with Google to ensure that Logitech Revue with the next version of Google TV incorporates the features and improvements that are most important to you,” Arora said today. “With these improvements, we hope you find that the Logitech Revue with the next version of Google TV is an easy way to integrate your existing broadcast or pay TV service with Internet content all on your HDTV.”
