Dr. Oz shares healthy grocery shopping tips

How often have you went to the supermarket with the best intentions to buy healthy foods. However, when you look at your cart in the checkout line you notice the same old healthy foods that you usually buy. Today, Dr. Oz shares his “Supermarket Survival Guide” to help you add a few more healthy foods to your cart that you may have been overlooking.

Dr Oz’s Mistakes People Make At The Grocery Store

First and foremost, many people go to the grocery store hungry. This is the first mistake that you can make. I’m guilty of this one! Make sure that you skip the “chips and goodies” aisle and head to the produce section first. Grab a fruit that you can snack on once you leave store, like an apple. I’m guilty of snacking on chips all the way home from the grocery store and then feel guilty when I get home!

Another supermarket mistake that people make is that they buy too many boxed foods. Buy fresh foods when yo can. Plan a weekly menu so you can make a grocery list before you go shopping.

Grass Fed Meat
The meat section is where most people spend most of their money. Try cutting down your meat purchases in half and doubling up on the fish.

Dr. Oz suggests having 1 night of red meat, 3 to 4 nights of fish, and 3-4 nights of poultry. When you are adding meat to your grocery cart look for 100% grass fed labeling on the package. Big Daddy made the suggestion of purchasing stew meats like beef shanks.

Grocery Store Survival Guide Tips
Load up half of your cart with fruits and vegetables. They make great snacks and are a much better option than chips. They also make great side dishes. Try choosing precut and pre-ready vegatables.. It’s much easier to grab pretty cut veggies to snack on rather than taking the time to cut up the veggies yourself. If your tired you may choose the unhealthy easier option of snacking on chips. Here are some more supermarket survival tips :

Add baby greens to your salad
When buying potatoes choose purple potatoes. Also, eat the skins of the potato. This is where most of the nutrition is.
Purchase celery and cabbage. They are very low in calorie and you can eat a lot without the worry of gaining weight (and you will likely lose weight)
Replace salt by using lemon limes to give dishes more zest. You can also use spices to add flavor to your meals.
Try Einkorn Wheat
Eikorn is a pasta that is great for people who are intolerant to gluten. Einkorn is high in fiber and protein. It also stabilizes your sugar. Many grocery stores carry Einkorn.

Japanese Crackers
Japanese crackers have a high fiber content and are low in fat. They are a healthier option than regular crackers and will make you feel full longer. These make great in between meal snacks because they only contain 100-130 calories.

Ak-Mak Flat Bread
Ak-Mak bread is an Armenian bread that is healthy and also tastes very good. It is high iin fiber and low in carbohydrates!

Kefir Milk
Kefir milk is a probiotic drink that helps to aid your digestion. It contains “good” bacteria that benefits your intestines. Add it to a smoothie or your cereal.. I have also googled “kefir recipes” which returned many helpful recipe hints and ways to add kefir milk to your diet.

Tapioca Pudding
Tapioca Pudding is actually quite healthy for you. I wasn’t expecting “pudding” as being on this list. Tapioca pudding contains cassava root. Cassava root helps to lower your cholesterol levels.
