How Much Does It Cost to Start Your Own Laser Tag Business?

According to Entrepreneur, the costs to start up a laser tag business can be as low as $10,000 or higher than $50,000. Setting up a venue so that a unique game playing area is offered can take both foresight and money. However, a laser tag venue can offer family fun and profits at the same time.
Location
You’ll need plenty of space for a laser tag facility. Look at locations that are at least 6,000 square feet. You’ll not only need an arena for the laser tag games, but you’ll also need an arcade area, space for birthday parties and a snack area. The costs of renting a location can vary based on location. Choose a location that is close enough to shopping and restaurants to receive a lot of traffic.
Building the Arena
Hire a construction contractor to build the laser tag arena. You’ll need at least two levels, and platforms and structures to hide behind. Everything will need to be padded for safety. One of the best ways to figure out what works well and what doesn’t is to visit other laser tag facilities and actively participate in a few games.
Purchase Equipment
Purchase control stations, a base sentry and phaser packs. You may also want to purchase additional LED lights. For the arcade area, purchase game systems. You may be able to purchase these used to save a bit of money. For the snack area, you’ll need a small commercial grade toaster oven, microwave, popcorn machine and soda fountain.
Licenses
Contact the secretary of state to obtain a business operating license. The requirements for licenses vary by state, but this license will allow you to collect sales tax. If you plan to have a snack area in your facility, you will also need a food handling permit. Food permits are available through the local health department. An inspection is usually required, and your employees may need to attend food safety training courses.
Insurance
You will need to purchase liability insurance. Contact a business insurance agent and find out what the current costs are for this insurance and if the agent recommends any other types of insurance for a laser tag facility. Some business owners purchase an umbrella policy in case of a personal law suit.
Get the Word Out
Plan a grand opening event to get the word out about the new laser tag facility. Send invitations to local media people and celebrities inviting them to a free event where they can try out the new laser tag arena. Plan to offer snacks and entertainment. Send press releases to local newspaper, television and radio stations and mention a few of the local celebrities planning to attend. Take out an ad in the local paper with a coupon for a first visit to the facility.
